|
| WHY: |
To celebrate the sixteenth anniversary of THE BLUES BALL which has developed into the largest annual ball in America.
For the past fifteen years, THE BLUES BALL/MEMPHIS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION has celebrated our great musical history while supporting numerous charities such as Porter-Leath Children's Center/PaLs, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, NARAS/MusiCares, Madonna Learning Center, Variety Children's Charities, The Baddour Center, and The Bodine School, among others, while also providing funding for Memphis Musicians including insurance support and Memphis area music scholarships.
Before THE BLUES BALL, Memphis music was "vacant, and without local and national passion," according to the legendary songwriter, Soul Man David Porter. However, since 1994, THE BLUES BALL has saluted the renowned talents of such remarkable artists as B. B. King; Rufus Thomas; Al Green; The Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis; Sid Selvidge; Soul Man Isaac Hayes; The BarKays; Jimmy Dickinson; Bobby Blue Bland; Teenie Hodges; Jason D. Williams; James Blackwood; The Angelic Voices of Faith; The Staple Sisters; The Jordanaires; Sam the Sham; Eddie Floyd; Little Milton; Booker T & the MG's, among others.

| Blues Ball quotes throughout the years... |
|
| |
"To understand what The Blues Ball means to Memphis music,
you would only have to remember what it was
like before The Blues Ball started.
'Vacant' and without passion..."
David Porter
Soul Man / Songwriter
"I'll never forget the time Pat told me the train station
was perfect for The Blues Ball. But in the next second she did say
there was a "small" problem since it had no
electricity, heat, toilets or running water. Otherwise it was "fabulous."
Thomas Boggs
Huey’s Proprietor
"The Blues are the taproot of American music. . ."
Dan Aykroyd
Blues Brother
"When you're talking about music. . .now that's my soul. . ."
Sam Philips
Sun Studios/Phillips Recording
"The Blues Ball is a noisy, unruly, beautifully fashioned sanctuary
of love where the realities of the egoplasmic world
can be (must be) left at the door. . ."
Michael Greene
Former President & CEO
The Recording Academy
" Thanks, Blues Ball, for waking us up as we lay,
for turning us on to music made in Memphis,
for a decade of doting memories and sensational experiences
that are being converted to high-pitched energy and purpose—at last."
Deanie Parker
President
STAX/Soulsville
"The Blues Ball is a 'live' portrait of what Memphis is about. . ."
George Klein
DJ Extraordinaire
"Ten Years of Goodness. . ."
Marie Draper
O’Landa Draper’s Associates
"The Blues Ball is like Memphis music—a freight train rolling fast,
rolling loud and loaded with
the finest people in a great American town. . ."
Henry Juszkiewicz
Chairman and CEO
Gibson Guitar Corp.
"No event has ever fully embraced or publicly acknowledged
the spirit and achievements of what Memphis music represents
in Memphis and around the world until
the arrival of The Blues Ball 10 years ago.
Pat Kerr Tigrett's creation is the institutional definition of the truly good citizen."
Knox Phillips
Phillips Recording
